On Tuesday evening, the 35-year-old Kurd Nezar M. was gunned down in a late sale in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Nezar M. is a Kurd from Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) who fought in his old homeland against IS Islamists and the Assad regime.
While the many Kurds in Berlin are in shock and are worried about the escalation of violence on their doorstep, the AfD Berlin yesterday published on its Facebook page the following stupid, completely inappropriate and impious post:
“When wild Kurdistan settles in Charlottenburg, only zero-tolerance politics will help”
Through this post, the ugly and inhumane world view of AfD is openly displayed. The statement of the AfD is not only a slap in the face of the family of the victim, but of all Kurds worldwide. The Kurds fought IS terror in Syria and Iraq and suffered thousands of deaths. Not only did they protect the Yazidi, Alawi, Sunni and Christian minorities in Syria, they also fought for the security of Germany and Europe.
Over a million Kurds have been living in Germany for decades. They are excellently integrated, work in associations and unions, work as lawyers or doctors and take on responsibility in politics for the entire society. They deserve to be treated with respect.
Therefore, as the Central Council of Kurds in Germany, we strongly condemn this exclusionary and racist statement of the AfD.
Our sympathy goes to the family of the victim and all Kurds in Berlin. We wish them strength and hope that those responsible will be found and brought to justice as quickly as possible.
