The Kurdish-European Society (KES) and its member organization Kurdish-European Law Society (KELS), together with the association “Verein der Eziden am unteren Niederrhein e.V. (Mala Ezdaî Kalkar)”, organized a panel discussion on the upcoming Kurdish independence referendum on 25 September 2017.
The well-attended event took place on 10 September 2017 in the premises of Mala Ezdaî Kalkar and was moderated by the deputy chairman of the Kurdish Community in Germany Mehmet Tanriverdi. Panelists were Kahraman Evsen (President of KES and Vice President of KELS), Osman Güden (Chairman of Mala Ezdaî Kalkar), Daniela Giannone (Vice President of KELS), Associate Prof. Dr. Abdulbary Al-Mudarris (member of the Board for the Self-Determination of Kurdistan).
All panelists agreed that the referendum should take place on September 25, 2017 as planned and not be postponed as requested by some. At the same time, the panelists were of the opinion that the process of democratization had to be continued, parliament to be re-activated and the rights of minorities secured in the Kurdish constitution. Only then could it be realistically assumed that the international community recognizes the outcome of the referendum and supports a Kurdish state on a sustainable basis.
The discussions continued after the official end of the panel with delicious Kurdish food, which Mala Ezdaî had kindly provided.
Overall it can be said that the event was very successful. Both the organizers and panelists as well as the guests finally left the venue with satisfaction.
