On 7 January 2017, the President of the Kurdish-European Society (KES), Kahraman Evsen and Member of the Board Devran Ölcer, visited the world-famous cemetery Le Cimetière du Père-Lachaise, where Kurdish personalities such as Yilmaz Güney, Ahmet Kaya and Dr. Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou are buried. The KES-Prize which will be awarded this year for the first time has been named after Dr. Ghassemlou.
Abdulrahman Ghassemlou was a Kurdish politician and chairman of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I). He was an important figure in the Kurdish movement and murdered in 1989 by the Iranian secret service in Vienna. Accordingly, it was important for the KES delegation to visit his grave and pay tribute to him as a person and his work for the Kurdish people.
