The German-Kurdish film “House Without Roof” by director Soleen Yusef won the Peace Film Award of the City of Osnabrück.

“House Without Roof” tells the story of the three siblings ALAN, JAN, and LIYA who were born in Iraqi Kurdistan but grew up in Germany. The three want to fulfil their mother’s last wish and burry her in their home village next to their father who died in war. During this fraught Kurdish odyssey they are not only confronted by their big Kurdish family which doesn’t accept their mother’s wish but also by themselves. During the last years the distance between the family members has increased, each lives his own life and when they talk to each other it soon becomes dominated by mutual accusations. At the same time, a terrible conflict is rising in their home country and first no one recognizes the dimensions of this conflict.

The Kurdish-European Society congratulates the young director for winning this award. Soleen Yusef strikes a chord with her film and deals with an important issue of our time that appeals to many young German-Kurds. We hope that “House Without Roof” is just the beginning of a big film career and wish Soleen Yusef every success in the future.
